The Essex were formed in 1962 and comprised Walter Vickers, Rodney Taylor, Billy Hill, Rudolph Johnson and with Anita Humes as lead singer, all were members of the U.S. Marine corps!!! The group signed to “Roulette” records in 1963 and had a million selling hit with their first record. Rudolph Johnson left the group, and the Essex became a quartet. Afte rone more hit the group’s name appeared as ‘The Essex Featuring Anita Humes. Being Marines made it hard for the group to take advantage of their hits and before long, Johnson was posted to Okinawa. Rodney Taylor was killed in 1966 in New York City during an attempted mugging. Anita Humes released several solo singles for “Roulette, but sadly died on May 30th, 2010, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In the 1970s, Hill headed up a group called The Courtship. This disc from 1967 has a couple of very light, superficial marks, conservatively graded in VG++ condition – Worth checking out the flip too!!
