The trio formed in 1962 as “The Three Caps,” with Samuel George as the lead vocalist and drummer, Don Storball on backup vocals and guitar, and Richard Mitchell (on backup vocals and keyboard. They were discovered  and signed by former Ann Arbor radio DJ Ollie McLaughlin for his Karen record label, they released their first single in 1963, “Dog and Cat” which didn’t sell well and the group dissolved.
Seeking to capitalize on the popularity of the dance crazes, Storball wrote “Cool Jerk”, the group re-formed and contacted McLaughlin. The song was recorded at Golden World Studios in Detroit on March 14, 1966, with the Motown house band The Funk Brothers. This disc from 1966 has light wear and some tiny surface pressing faults (a couple of tiny “lumps” that do not affect play whatsoever) The disc plays with some light crackle which is overpowered by the music. The flip is great too!!
