The Exceptions were from North Philly and comprised Jimmy Ellis, Earl Young, Val Walker, Russell Boston and Charles Hynes, and released their first single on “Pro” records entitled “Down by the Ocean” b/w “Pancho Villa,” in 1965. It was originally scheduled for “P & L” records, but the deal never happened, though it was successful locally. They then went to “Parkway” records where they recorded “A Sad Goodbye” b/w “You Got The Power” in 1966 as The Four Exceptions. “Down by the Ocean” was released again on “Groovey Grooves” records in 1968 and later, the label issued two of their  singles “Baby You Know I Need You” b/w “The Look in Her Eyes,” and “Danny Boy” b/w “The Shagg,” in 1972 to capitalise on the success of two of the members, Ellis and Young joining The Trammps. This disc comprises two previously unisseed versions of two the “Groovey Grooves” , recorded in the mid 1960’s originally scheduled for Paul Mosley’s “P & L” records, produced by Phil Gaber. This disc is licensed from Phil Gaber productions.
