Fontella Marie Bass was born on July 3rd, 1940 in St Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Gospel singer Martha Bass and accompanied her mother on tours until the age of sixteen. She released some records on “Bobbin” records, the “Prann” records and “Sonja” records. She then moved to Chicago and signed for “Chess” records, but left after two years in 1967. Tiring of the mainstream music scene, she and husband Lester Bowie left America and moved to Paris in 1969 and retired from music and concentrated on raising a family, returning briefly and occasionally to perform and record. Fontella Bass sadly died on December 26th, 2012. This disc from 1965 has light wear, conservatively graded in VG++ condition, worth checking out the flip too
